Household transitions Cats
Prepare a cat’s quiet base for moving day
Coordinate doors, helpers and essentials before boxes begin moving through the home.

Give the cat a plan separate from the boxes
Before moving day, decide on a secure quiet space and who is responsible for it. Tell helpers which door must remain managed and why. A sign can support the agreement, but it does not replace telling the people doing the work.
Cats Protection recommends a safe room as part of moving preparation. Plan the equivalent space in the new home too, with appropriate separate essentials and a retreat. Keep transport and individual care instructions with the advice relevant to your cat.
Make a practical handover list
- Identify the person managing the cat's space and the door routine.
- Keep essential supplies accessible rather than packed into an unlabelled load.
- Prepare the new starting room before giving access to it.
- Tell helpers when the space is occupied so it does not become a storage room.
- Record where the cat and its supplies are at each handover.
Keep arrival unhurried
Place the carrier in the prepared room and allow the cat to emerge voluntarily. Avoid gathering people at the opening or introducing the whole home at once. A hiding choice belongs in the plan; do not remove it because you want immediate reassurance through contact.
Observe how the cat uses the starting area and keep the route to essentials clear as unpacking continues. Furniture and boxes can quickly change a layout that looked suitable the previous evening.
Separate later decisions
Outdoor access, travel requirements and individual health or behaviour concerns need their own relevant guidance. This article does not provide a timetable for those decisions or a method for sedation or transport equipment selection.
The arrival planner helps record room preparation and responsibilities. Use it for ordinary task notes, with sensitive details kept in your private records. Moving is a sequence of handovers; clarity about the next one is more useful than a crowded checklist of generic milestones.
Sources & practical application
These principles inform the guide. Household worksheets, examples and sequencing are our editorial application, not reported experiments or endorsements by the source organisations.
Source principle: Prepare a safe room and communicate with helpers so the cat is not disturbed or accidentally let out.
Source principle: Begin with a quiet space, let the cat emerge voluntarily and introduce family gradually.
